What precautions should we take when acquiring a pet? Before acquiring an animal we should ask ourselves if we have a place big enough for the animal to express its natural behavior, if we will have time to give it attention, and if we will have financial conditions to maintain the health of that animal with recurrent visits to the veterinarian. If all the answers to these questions are positive, after adopting or acquiring your pet the best thing to do is to seek the advice of a veterinarian, because each species presents particularities of management, and when everything is done correctly, many diseases can be avoided.

What are the most unusual tests in medicine? There are many exams that are not part of our daily routine, mainly because they are more expensive or difficult to collect, but the exam that I conducted only once in my routine was the cerebrospinal fluid analysis to search for the distemper virus. Distemper is a viral disease that affects dogs and normally we use the urine test to verify whether the animal is positive or not, but in this case the result came back inconclusive, so we sedate the animal and collect its CSF for analysis, and the collection site is at the base of the animal's skull, where we insert a catheter and wait for the liquid to be collected.

For a person to go to veterinary school, does he/she also need to specialize in surgery? Is every veterinarian also a surgeon or not necessarily? Not necessarily, but you should know that during undergraduate studies, surgical technique and surgical pathology are mandatory subjects, because they cover the main areas in college to give the student a foundation. After graduating, you can choose an area where it is not necessary to perform surgeries, as I did!

Veterinarians can also act in discoveries, for example: Vaccines? For sure, the Butantã Institute is one of the examples where several vaccines and serums are produced, such as the anti-hyphid serum, and where many veterinarians, biologists, biomedical doctors, and other health professionals work.

What was your family's reaction when they heard that you wanted to be a scientist? At what age you realized you wanted to be a scientist? How did you chose the scientific area you wanted to dedicate yourself to? Everyone was very happy, but at the same time they warned me that it was not an easy path, but at no time did anyone discourage me from following this path. I believe that since I was a little girl I have always been questioning about everything and researched as much as I could to get the answers to my questions. During the second year of graduation I was introduced to the discipline of Veterinary Parasitology and I was immediately delighted, I found it amazing to study the life cycles and how parasites cause disease, after that no other area caught my attention as much as this one!
